Scribbles, Sketches, and Shades will be a collection of ten progressive bassoon solos for beginning bassoon. Designed in close consultation with pedagogue and renowned reedmaker Ariel Detwiler, each of these solos will feature teachable moments for advancement through the first stages of learning the bassoon within a fun, approachable solo suitable for any studio recital. Scribbles, Sketches, and Shades is about creating opportunities to include students of any age or musical experience level, allowing everyone to participate and gain valuable performance skills without overwhelming younger players with information for which they may not yet be ready. Each of the progressive solos contained within Scribbles, Sketches, and Shades is embodied by a color of crayon, moving through primary colors,, secondary colors, and tertiary colors.
A sprightly romp only utilizing fingers of the left hand.

A bright, playful dance focusing on moments switching between fingers of the left hand and fingers of the right.

A triumphant fanfare celebrating a new note in a new register.

A regal march focusing on crossing the break by slurring upwards to G.

A peaceful pastoral moving between registers with more ease.

A rumbling hornpipe in g minor that focuses on quicker jumps between registers.

A glorious, graceful rhapsody centering leaps of an octave or more.

A delicate, sensitive ballad introducing players to the wider literature, with key and time changes typical of most contemporary bassoon music.

The consortium membership for Scribbles, Sketches, and Shades is currently open. Each member of the consortium will receive a digital copy of the score, recognition in the front matter and the score’s dedication, a thank you note from the composer, and a virtual group Q/A session/launch party with the composer upon the collection’s completion.
As part of the contract for Scribbles, Sketches, and Shades, consortium members joining at the student rate will be required to submit a valid student ID from their education institution.
Consortium members joining at the professional rate need not provide student ID. For not-being-a-student reasons.
Scribbles, Sketches, and Shades will be completed and distributed to the consortium membership on August 1, 2025.
Scribbles, Sketches, and Shades is under consortium exclusivity until August 2026, at which time it will be made available at Trevco Music.
