Imagine you are on an arctic expedition, traversing the treacherous conditions into the Arctic Circle. As night begins to fall and darkness overwhelms you, all you can hear is the roar of the wind and the dusty sweep of snow. Suddenly, the wind calms, and the canopy of your tent glows with a mysterious, soft light. You open the tent, walk out into the snow, and look up into the aurora borealis.
Bridges of Light is designed to capture the emotional moment of witnessing the Northern Lights. Rising and constantly shifting, the piece takes you from the inky darkness of an arctic wasteland to the glorious zenith of lights above.
Bridges of Light was commissioned by Dr. Stefanie Gardner for the Glendale Community College Bass Clarinet Choir for their performance at the International Clarinet Association ClarFest 2021 Virtual.
The bassoon octet version of Bridges of Light was premiered on July 25, 2024 at the 2024 International Double Reed Society Conference in Flagstaff, AZ, USA by Alex Meaux, Gina Moore, Ryan Morris, Ariel Detwiler, Ashley Mania, Haley Houk, Chris Werner, and Shawn Karson, with Kevin Day conducting.
You can purchase the Bassoon Octet version of Bridges of Light at Trevco Music Publishing. For the Bass Clarinet Choir version, contact Kincaid directly.
